How often does Windows check for new drivers?

Windows is a popular operating system that is known for its user-friendly interface and robust features. One of the important components of Windows is its ability to automatically check for new device drivers. In this blog, we will discuss how often Windows checks for new drivers and why it is important to keep your drivers updated.

When you connect a new device to your Windows PC, Windows will automatically check its database for the appropriate driver for that device. If it does not find the required driver in its database, it will search for it online. Once the required driver is found, Windows will install it and your device will be ready to use.

But what about updating the drivers for the devices that are already installed on your computer? Windows provides an option to automatically check for updates for drivers and other important software. By default, Windows checks for new drivers once a week, but you can change this setting if you want.

To change the frequency of Windows checking for new drivers, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Control Panel and click on the “System” option.
  2. Click on the “Device Manager” option.
  3. Right-click on your computer name and select “Properties”.
  4. In the System Properties window, click on the “Hardware” tab and then click on the “Windows Update Driver Settings” button.
  5. In the Windows Update settings window, select the “Never check for drivers software” option if you don’t want Windows to check for new drivers. You can also select “Check for drivers software once a week” or “Check for drivers software every time I connect a new device”.

It is important to keep your drivers up-to-date for several reasons. First, updated drivers can fix bugs and improve the performance of your devices. Second, updated drivers can enhance the security of your computer by fixing vulnerabilities in older drivers. Third, updated drivers can ensure compatibility with newer versions of Windows or other software that you might be using on your computer.

In conclusion, Windows checks for new drivers once a week by default, but you can change this setting if you want. It is important to keep your drivers up-to-date for better performance, security, and compatibility. You can check for new drivers manually or have Windows check for them automatically. Whatever method you choose, make sure to keep your drivers updated for a smooth and secure computing experience.
